In the third quarter of 2024, navigation and maps apps continued to play a crucial role for users across Africa. According to Sensor Tower data, the top five apps in this category showed varied performance trends on the unified platform, which combines both iOS and Android data.
Google Maps maintained a consistent pattern in weekly downloads, peaking at approximately 95K in late August. Meanwhile, its weekly active users fluctuated slightly, starting at around 3.1M and peaking at 3.2M in early August before settling back to 3.1M by the end of September.
Live Earth Map & GPS Map saw a decrease in weekly downloads early in the quarter, from about 77K to 25K, but rebounded to around 47K by the end of August. Its active user base grew steadily, starting at 140K and reaching 153K by the end of September.
Google Earth had stable weekly downloads, with a notable increase to 55K in early September. The app's active users remained relatively stable, hovering around 330K, with a slight dip to 319K at the quarter's close.
Waze Navigation & Live Traffic experienced a peak in downloads at 43K in late July, with a gradual decline to 31K by the end of September. Its active user numbers remained robust, starting at 461K and maintaining around 448K by the quarter's end.
GPS, Maps, Voice Navigation faced a decline in weekly downloads from 44K to 23K throughout the quarter. Despite this, the app's revenue showed a slight upward trend, peaking at $103 in early September. Active users decreased from 122K to 77K by the end of September.
